What is this noise?!?!?!?!

I think not, because I have another AC compressor sitting at home. For me, no AC is not an option for a summer DD.

What I am thinking is there is an idler pulley in place of the AC comp on his engine. THere is on the 3.4L and I do know they run the same AC comp. I tried to look up the belt diagram at work today but it didnt list one for non AC cars. and the belts were only a couple MM different in size.

I kinda figured that. What I was trying to say is dont just delete the AC comp without checking to see if an idler was needed. I could not give you the 100% answer on that because my systems at work didnt show the belt routing for the non AC car. Putting a new comp in place of the dead one is the best way to go any way.

I looked at it again with the guy at AutoZone, and he also confirmed it's a rocker/lifter issue. I really need to get it taken care of by the end of next week (impending 500 mile drive). Any suggestions for what rockers/lifters I should get? New or used? OEM or aftermarket?

I would first take off the valve cover and do some exploring. If you're lucky, it could be something that won't require dismantling the engine, like:
A rocker adjusting nut could have worked loose.
A rocker arm could have gotten badly worn; I once bought a car where the rocker arm wore so bad that the pushrod launched through the tip of the rocker.
You could have a bent pushrod.

took the valve covers off today. I'm pretty sure the only thing that accomplished was pissing me off. I'm pretty sure the problem is on the driver's side, but I couldn't see any difference from one side to the other. I still have no idea how to fix that valvetrain issue.

Im sorry to hear. From the videos I find it doubtfull that it is a lifter. It sounds more solid than anything else. At first I thought a connecting rod but later after reading comments from others I would agree that it could be the balancer or one of the accessories. I assume that since you pulled the covers that you already pulled the belt and tried it witout it, right?
good luck!

I've had a two people look at it and diagnose it as a valvetrain issue. The Chevrolet dealer shop that looked at it said they tried it without the belt and that wasn't the problem (although I wasn't really that pleased with them and I kinda didn't trust them).
