Default Volt meter guage

I'm new here and did a search, but couldn't find an answer for this. My concern is that my volt meter reads 13 volts when drive under a load, but when I come to a stop and at idle, the needle goes down to the first red dots. Is this normal? If I bring it up to about 1500 rpm's it will show 13 again. I have a 2000 SS convertible with 87k on it. Everything is original. Thanks in advance!!

Confirm the voltage with a hand held meter. The gages that come in production cars are super cheap. Lower voltage can come for a alternator starting to get weak or bad battery cables or connections.
