Those silver cogged things in there are the reluctor wheels. The outside one is the 18X and the inside is the 3X.

Yes you do!!! that is the big pulley in the picture on the left side. You do need the puller tool and most autopart stores carry them. Ask them for the Harmonic ballancer puller for a Series II 3.8L engine. For good measure tell them it is out of something like a 2001 bonneville. (most camaro and firebirds use a different pulley that does not need a special tool)

No the engine cranks over. If it was the security system the engine would not crank.

Some part stores rent them but this pulley has some odd thread that is not very common. Sorry I cant remember what the thread was but it is odd.

when i pulled the balancer off of darling's car, i didnt need a puller. i undid the bolt with a 1 inch socket and my impact gun and it slid right off the crank. it was the same for install. altough for the crank sensor, you shouldnt have to remove the balancer. there should be access if you undo the two 10mm nuts that bolt the p/s pump on and pull it off the mounting studs and hang it off to the side. should be plenty of room then.

now, have you actually checked for spark? also with darling's car, i noticed 1 wire in the plug going into the coil packs was slightly pushed out. when i reassembled it, her car had a code, something like high voltage primary ignition circuit, and would stall. i used a small bit of copper wire to make a temporary fix before i replaced that pin. since then there has been no issue. might be worth looking into

Problem was the CKS, got it fixed and cranked right up. Did a full tune up, oil change, drove nice then randomly shut off while driving again... Its the SAME symptoms as before. I'm bumping this since I am having the same problem again and maybe some of you can help.

Does it drop out when it hits operating temp? If so it more than likely is an issue with your car going into closed loop. You could have another sensor that is not reading properly or at all and causing the failure. Also it may not be tripping a CEL if the computer does not have the time to run the diagnostics on that system before the engine dies. O2 and MAF could easily cause this, neither are cheap so I would not suggest throwing money at it to try and fix it see if you can find a flow chart like Liberty posts to track down the issue. L

Liberty do ya have a flow chart on this issue?
