Default Update on broken motor

Its fixed...for the most part. Ha... I had a Series 2 3800 to begin with and the wrist pin broke causing the motor to turn to soup. So I found a Series 3 3800 with less than 20k for 400 dollars and had it put in. Definitely runs a lot better, being that it actually works. I do have an issue though. I'm not sure if the wiring is out of whack or what. But sometimes when I crank up, it idles weird. Like it will go to 4000rpm for a few seconds then down to around 500rpm and then right back up. MAF sensor is good, not sure what to check next. Also when I am driving, sometimes when I push the clutch in, the drop in rpms will kill the car. I just need to know what to check next. Thanks!

What year? The early 3.8s have a IAC that can cause the issue but from 99-02 the throttle was servo controlled.

TiltingTank, I have same issue my 98 3800 Series II is toast I am looking for a replacement now. How much trouble was it to use a Series III (Other than issue above)? Did you drop the K member or pull it from the top? How long did it take you too swap? I am looking for a FWD motor they very hard to find, I am Gulfport, MS.

Sorry, I can't help you out. But thanks for any information you can share.

Head over to the V6 section, there is a sticky there that tells you what cars came with S3 motor. Next hit up Car-parts.com to search local yards.

Dropping the Kmember is the way to go. PM me an email address that can handle about a 1.5 meg file and I can send you a step by step. Its for the LS1 but most of it is the same.

My 96 project in the link below was a 3800 (but from a Camaro not a FWD) the Project 93 shows some pics with the cherry picker hooked up to remove the Kmember.

Good luck

On the 99 you need to consider that the throttle servo is causing the issue you are having. Also you may want to look at the PCM and sensor on the throttle petal.
