Ugh, ticking from under the valve cover?

You can get clips that go on the rocker arms. I have no idea if they fit the 3800 but I would think they would. Is that still the break in oil? I would be temped to change the oil and cut the filter inhalf and make sure everything looks ok.
I could be a lot of things but if there is some small metal floating around in there it can cause even new lifters to stick. It is common to have a small amount of very small fine metal in the break in oil. The second oil change should be as clean.

No, not still break in oil. This will be the second oil change. The first oil change was done at about 1000-1100 miles. Now it's about 3000 later.

do you have a link to show these clips? im sure i could fashing something. i was thinking cardboard but it will still get everywhere. the first oil change i cut open the filter, and there were about zero metal bits in it. i think the drain plug is magnetic, and there was nothing on there. might try putting a magnet on the filter.
btw, the tick isnt constant, it was sort of fading in an out at idle

Fading in and out sounds like a lifter messing with you. A worn rocker can make the same noise as a lifter but it does not normally come and go.

You could zip tie some card stock or tin to the rocker to help deflect some of the oil. It will still get a little spillage but not much. Make sure oil is coming up all of the pushrods at about the same rate. Low oil flow is the sign of a clogged lifter. I am guessing you already know that.

Can you tell which side the noise is coming from, so you don't have to mess up both sides? And did you put new lifters in with the rebuild? I doubt this is the cause of the noise, but after a rebuild the best time to change the oil is right after the first virgin flight. There can be a bit of unwanted nasties (assembly lube, grit, grime, lint, that missing work glove), floating around that's best gotten rid of asap.

we ran mine with each valve cover lifted off slightly so we could see in there and didnt have a mess. i think mine was also pretty low on oil when we did it though. did you try readjusting the lifters and see if that fixes the problem?

We're going to try thicker oil first on Wednesday and see if that fixes it. If not, Case wants to try a running test. If it is a lifter, luckily they have a one year warranty on them. It will just be a pain to pull them out all over again.
