So my turn signals have been on the fritz since I had some steering column work done at a Chevrolet shop. Coincidence or not, I am not sure yet. Checked all signal bulbs and they seem fine. The condition is intermittent -- started out where the flasher sound was off keel -- not steady like it usually is. Now sometimes the signals on BOTH sides do not work, other times is works really slowly or sometimes skips some flashes and then starts flashing again. Sure sounds like some wiring issue to me...

Any other insights from anyone? TIA!

 

flasher is not that much so try a new flasher, if no change then i would look at the wiring, wiring connections and switch.

 

Thanks, it is the flasher module. My guess is the shop somehow fried it during the steering column repair -- not sure how...

 

easy fix, good deal. could have been on its last legs too.

 

So the signals now work, but there seems to be a 1.5 sec. delay before the flasher lights illuminate, plus I can barely hear the flasher, compared with normal! I suspect a short in the steering column from that repair... argh!

 

are you sure you got a blinker flasher and not a 4 way flasher?

 

Will have to check, since I am not the one who changed it -- will it be obvious from looking at it? I guess I will have to do a part # lookup...

 

if all else fails(and if the flasher is in fact your issue) you can get a mechanical flasher similar to the ones they use in semis. Instead of using the power load to break the circuit, there is actually a motor that makes/breaks the connection. biggest drawback is that it wont be dead obvious when a turn signal bulb goes out.

Other than that, my car has always had rather slow turn signals. I've never really thought anything of it. Just thought thats how it was supposed to be

 

Right now w/the replaced flasher, the biggest issue is it seems slow to start once I push the lever, and it is WAY too quiet compared to before.

So this is the turn signal flasher I have -- trying to figure out if this unit is a proper match or not... From searching online, the part # is FLR-536/552-BP, the unit itself says:

Are 4th Gens supposed to have thermal or electronic flashers?


This little video was SUPER helpful in locating the two flasher units, just look for those clips!:

 

Mine was really slow until I replaced the rotted out sockets and put the correct bulbs in it. Make sure your contacts are clean in the sockets. Mine were so rusted I just replaced the sockets. I found some PICO sockets that weren't exactly the same one, but they worked, and were like $12 instead of $40 which NAPA wanted for direct replacement.
