trouble getting the starter out
i tried posting this in the V6 section but i got no reply and i really need to get this done so my dad has a car to get to work on monday
my dad has a 94 3.4 and it has had recent starting problems. at first it would hesitate to start, taking a few tries to get it to. now when we try to start it, it just makes a clicking noise. i had the alternater tested and there is a new battery in there so that led me to the starter which is a pain in the *** to get out. once i have all the bolts off, where should i pull it out of the car because it looks to me like it will be tight getting out due to mainly the exaust that is getting in the way
thanks for the help

RE: trouble getting the starter out
1) Disconnect Negative cable from battery.
2) Raise car.
3) Disconnect both exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds, allow crossover/Y pipe to drop. May want to soak the exhaust mounting bolts/nuts with penetrating oil to avoid breaking them.
4) Unbolt starter and lower it gently without breaking any wires.
5) Check for presence of mounting shims. Save any shims for use with new starter.
6) Remove electrical wires/cables from old starter and transfer to new starter.
7) Put everything back in opposite sequence, make sure to reuse shims if there were any used with the old starter.

RE: trouble getting the starter out
thanks a ton pete i got everything off and back on now but it was a bear to take off the exaust pipe - somehow the screw in the clamp holding the first cat and the Y-pipe together got welded to the actual clamp and i had to drill a hole to break out the screw but i got another clamp for it so everything is good to go. now all i have to do is put the alternater back in because i had taken that out first to see if that was the problem.
