Default Trans. Linkage or internal problem ?

Greetings Camaro fans;
I'm just a brand new guy-on-the-block on the Camaro Forum but am a long time gear-head and hot-rod freak. My son has a '94 Z28 with an automatic. I'm not familiar enough to know if it's a 700R4 or a 4L60E. The other day he sez if made a wierd noise and at first he thought it was the drive-shaft. Turns out that was not the problem. At this point the thing will shift into park (correctly) and into reverse (correctly) and neutral (also correctly) but won't go into any forward gear. He said that at one point, after it malfunctioned, it did shift into drive but only made a "spinning" noise from what sounded like inside of the tranny. Since then it won't go into a forward gear.
I haven't had a chance to get under it but thought I'd take a shot in the dark and see if anyone has a ball-park idea where to start. I don't have a proper scanner to look at the electronics of it.
Thanx for any thoughts on the matter.

I dont think it sound too good to me,

have a read of this, a list of most common problems:

I think it is likely going to need a rebuild in some form if you have no gears

Thanx for the info.....and, that's scary ! Did the 94Z28 come with a 700R4 or 4l60E, only?

4L60E was the only auto available. Check fluid level. If OK check shifter linkage making sure the control lever is tight on the control shaft and that it follows the motion of the shifter handle. If that is OK, then it is time for a rebuild as it sounds like something inside broke.

If I'm reading you correctly, you're saying that the transmission won't physically go into gear, like something is locking it out?

Camaro 69,
Well, from what the kid describes to me, it sounds like it physically won't shift from neutral into top gear. I haven't had a chance to get under it to look at it yet. But, I'm so used to the older trannies (TH350 and 400, etc I'd know exactly where to start loking with those. It seems like it could be linkage but I know these newer electronic ones are way more complicated with the computer and all involved.
Thanks for your interest in it.

I had a linkage problem on my '95 3.4L where I could shift into gear but the gear became neutral, and the drive was in a different position. The fix wasn't too bad...

Z28Pete,
Thank you for that bit of info; that eliminates one more possibility. But, darn it, the 4L60E is probably even more complicated than the 700R4, RATS ! Methinks that I'll probably just start putzin' with the linkage and see where that leads. I hope I can't hurt it any worse than it already is. At least (as opposed to the kid) I'll know when to stop if something looks to wierd to me.
Thanx again,
COPCO

Libertyforall1776,
And thanks to you for that bit of info, also. It's always encouraging when someone tells me it may not be quite as bad as it seems at the moment. Being an old-skool
kind of guy, I can do some linkage tricks.
Thanks, again to you and all the others.

Ah, well if the leaver wont shift that could be the problem, i know another guy on here who had similar trouble and replaced the linkage cable with a new GM one and all was fine ( he had just rebuilt the trans so it wasnt that).

Also COPCO, the 4L60E is a glorified 700R4 really from what i have read, the electronics control the solenoids etc for line pressures and stuff but the internals of a rebuild seem similar to those of the older boxes. I have done a bit of reading an plan to rebuild mine with performance parts
