keep in mind, depending upon the mold made by the manufacturer, not all tires are the same size even though they say their the same size. A 275/60 hoosier drag radial is almost a full INCH wider than a similarly size 275/60 mickey thompson drag radial

What manufacturer are you looking at specifically?

Due to tire squat, measuring the height while on the car is completely inaccurate, unless you jack it up off the ground and use some sort of "caliper" method.

The best way to measure diameter is to measure circumference and divide by Pie (3.1416)

It think the number system is suppost to work like this.

245 = Wide of the tire. Converts to 9.645"

45 = The ratio of width vs height 9.645 * .45 = 4.340

To get diameter you take the 4.340 x 2 plus the diameter wheel

245/45/17 = 25.68
245/45/18 = 26.68

There is some variation on where the measuments are taken and dont forget you wear 3/8" of tread off your tire that will change the diameter 3/4"

While doing some recent tire comparison shopping at tirerack, I found that different brands of the same "size" tire differed by as much as 1/2" in height. Physically measuring somebody else's tire isn't going to tell you diddly. You're better off going by the advertised specs of the very tire you want to run.

I am not sure where the dimension is to. Is it designed to the diameter at the middle of the tread wear or lowest useable point of the tire (wear indicator) or the diameter of a new tire?

This is just guessing but if it was to the lowest useable thread (wear indicator) it would make sence that the diameters of new tires would vary because thread depth varies. But it could just as easy be the companies just do things a little different.

Default thank you

thanks for the reply.very helpful everyone..I lowered my 94 and now am looking at wheels and tires,Its a juggling thing, Id like to go with An 18x9 with 245-45 on the front and 274 35 on the back,id like 285 but cant find a wheel at 9.5 ,they start to all look the same after 9''Im looking for the classic hot rod look,Not the corvette look.I like the american tork-thrust racing wheel.Do you all think that a nitto 555 ,285 will fit a 9'' wheel????I know the factory will say no,But what about real world experience?
