Default Swap Questions

i've been looking up info on the swap and i'm kinda confused, apperently the 98 models had their own little thing going on with the computer and fuel stuff? people say that 98 is different from 93-97 and the 99-02, so my question is, will i need a 98 ls1 motor with the 98 computer and wiring harness for the swap to work, or if i get a 99-02 ls1 will it be just fine? thanx (and i do do know that i will need a whole new computer either way) also, i am cheap so if i get an aftermarket tach and temp guage can i keep my stock gauge cluster?

A 98 ECU will run any LS1 engine. The 97-98 LS1 had different heads (perimeter valve cover bolts instead of center bolt). THe ECU itself deos not have as many tables in the fuel and spark maps (among others). So tuning a 98 ECU can be a little more of a challenge. To answer your last question about the gauge cluster, yes you can.

that helps, will a 98 ecu run a 99+ ls1? or would that not work?

Did you even read what he said? The first thing JD said was 'A 98 ECU will run ANY LS1 engine'.

I thought that was what you were saying helped. I know the gauge cluster will work, though only the tach and oil pressure would be off.

as far as HPtuners is concerned the 98 and 99+ pcms look exactly the same. However the 98 knock sensors are much more sensitive which is irritating. Also, the pcm itself has fewer failsafes, so frying a 98 pcm is more of a possibility.

sweet, stock speedo, aftermarket tach and oil pressure, so is what spector saying is that the 98 has the possibilty of more things going wrong with it and its harder to install? i also heard that if i go with a 99+ engine my 98 gas pedal needs to be changed? something like the 98's were electric and new ones r mechanical?
