Default Steering

My 2000, SS seems to steer kinda hard. I just bought it 3 weeks ago so maybe I'm just not used to it yet and maybe it's supposed to be that way. I can steer my 2018 1500 Silverado with 2 fingers. Can't do that with the Camero! And the steering wheel doesn't seem to return to going straight very well after turning. It has sat still a lot for the last several years but I drove it 730 miles from Indianapolis to Syracuse NY when I bought it so it seems like if it was stiff from sitting it would have loosened up. It only has 8,700 miles on it. Any thoughts?

Have you checked the power steering fluid level and condition?
Have you checked the belt tension on the PS pump?

No but I need to check those things. Since I brought it home I haven't driven it due to snow and horrible weather, I will check those things, thank you much.

grease all your fittings on the front end, ball joints, tie rod ends and such. your power steering pump may be unhappy, common problem with 4th gens. is it whining when you turn?

I had the car fully serviced when I got it home. Oil change lube etc by a good repair shop. I added power steering fluid to the cold line. The belt that runs the steering pump is tight as a banjo string and looks new with lettering still on it. When steering it doesn't whine. I took my wife for her first ride in it yesterday and it occurred to me that if I was racing it on a track I would what the steering to be tight with no play. That's how it is.

It's probably normal, mine takes more effort than my daily driver Buick Lucerne,in part no doubt due to the larger 275 front tires.

I believe you are correct. And I stand corrected, the steering wheel does return after cornering. Thank you guys for responding to my thread.

My Z28 and my 04 GTO steered about the same but when I get in my winter commuter (Pontic G6 GT FWD) I tend to over steer. The G6 has almost no resistance when I turn the wheel.

After saying that GM has issues with both the power steering pump and the Steering rack seals getting hard. Power steering normally has the noise with it but with the rack seals the only symptom is harder to steer. Your SS also has 2 u-joints that could get tight They are on the small shaft that goes from the bottom of the steering collum to the rack under the hood. Maybe you should test drive another low miles one? I would think your mechanic would have felt something not working right as he drove it in and out of the shop. But this car is 25 years old so it could be the first time a younger tech would have worked on one. Just remember there is no way any tech can know everything about every car. Every body type and engine/trans combo has their issues and their strengths.

Thank you for your input. I'm guessing the fact that the car sat undriven for many years wasn't good for it. The bottom line is the more I drive the car the more I love it! I think I'm just not used to it. It is a superb automobile!

I took my wife for her first ride Friday. She loves the car as much as I do. I've never driven a car like it, and I've never driven a car that sits so low. It was a country ride all on paved roads of course. When you pull away from a stop sign and step on the pedal a little it just takes off. You can tell that it's a really fast car!
