Default Starter prices

So cammy has been randomly not wanting to start, and it's gotten to the point she doesn't want to start at all - when my girlfriend turned the key the starter would make noise (sometimes, other times it was silent unless my GF was turning the key wrong but how hard is that) but the engine wouldn't try to start at all. It didn't sound healthy but i don't really know what a healthy starter sounds like anyways.

So I pulled the starter off today, kinda a pain as I just had it jacked up with a scissor jack on the dirt not giving me much room but I got it off, worst part was an 18 bolt connected through the transmission housing? that just did not want to move - when I finally got it to go it literally 'screamed' at me as it finally gave way!! But finally the starter was mine~! It's got some rust on it, doesn't look so great but I wasn't sure.

So I took her down to NAPA to test and they took my starter into the back room hooked it up to a machine which says it was bad. So I asked if I can order a new one, and I guess a new starter is $163 + tax!?!? Yikes, I thought they were like $60!

Does that sound right to you guys, $163 for a starter and I trade in my old one? Is there a better place I can go online to order it or am I stuck paying the $163?

i work at a carqust and i pulled it up real quick. reman with a 3 yr warranty goes for 140 plus tax and new with a lifetime waranty is 170. and guessing since i did it at my computer at home, but there is probably a 40 percent mark up there so, im sure i could get one cheaper. Hate to admit it, but a lot of the time autozone with be lower than us, because of how are computer systems mark ups and what not are set up.

Wow! You are a braver person than I. Scissor jack? Those things look at me like they are saying "I kill you"! LOL. Check with some of your local salvage yards to see if you can get a used one if you don't have any of the Advanced or Autozones.

Don't do any more work under your car with just a scissor jack supporting it. People die that way. Seriously. Buy or borrow some good ramps or jackstands if your going to do your own work.

I don't think bravery enters into this. LOL!

find an old tire or block of wood to set under the car so if it does fall off the jack so u dont get squished. the starters are not cheap. i picked up a tuff stuff reduction starter from summit for 113 and they have regular tuff stuff for 150.
