Unless they are putting it in for you too that is WAY too much money. Those trans go for about 500. Theres a place here in Omaha Nebraska that has one for 475 with 63k on it for only 475. A t56 is about that price though.

before the engine dies? Your engine died lol? Well as far as the engine goes hell if I know, they go for an extremely long time if they are well taken care of or can die under 100k if you beat the crap out it. All depends on your driving style and maintenance schedule.

I know you said your in a hurry but you could atleast say what year and engine size.

Take it to a real mechanic. Spend the 50 bucks and get it checked over. He does not have xray glasses but he can tell if the car has been maintained. I good mechinc will know how to check to see if the motor has been loaded up with STP or has metal shaving in the oil.

There is no way to tell you how long that motor will last. IMO the 3.8's are 200K motors. I have seen motors with 75K on them that where shot. These are normally not well maintained cars or city cars. The city car can have low miles on them but have more hours running then a car with 150K car with highway miles. Cars really should have hours meter not miles. I have a 96 with a 5 speed with 130K on it. The motor is completely shot. It streched a rod and the piston smacked the head, along with a spun main. The last owner said it ran perfect right up till night the knocking started.

yea i should have specified, its a 94 rs with 134k miles 3.8 v6, nothing done to it, this guy has had it sitting in his driveway for about 6 mnths now and he goes outside to start it every once in a while. he said lately its been idling a little weird and it needs a tune up, non synthetic 10w30 just sitting for a bit tends to get a little thick. i just wanted to know an average life of the engines if their not beat on?

First year for the 4th Gen RS is 96, First year for the 3.8 with a 5 speed was 96. They did not make a 94 RS 3.8 5speed.

If its a 94 3.4 with a 134K unless its been babied its whole life or the top end of the engine has been rebuilt (intake and head gaskets)you are running on borrowed time.

Never said it was bad. It is just known for intake and head gaskets. As a general rule cars don't like sitting add all that up on a 15 year old motor and I would not be suprised in the least to see a blown head gasket if the car was pushed hard. 1500 for running 4th gen is a good deal. I would just plan on pulling the top end of the motor and resealing it. Then you have a 200K motor.
