Should I get a haynes or chilton manual for my car then.

Haynes and Chilton are alright, for the most basic of information. However, neither will show much detail for your car.
The absolute best choice is a factory service manual for your exact year and model. It will list everything and have detailed troubleshooting information for just about any problem your car would encounter.

Look at it this way The manual set I have for the Camaro is three volumes that are a total of about 5 inches thick the escape is 4 volumes and it also totals about 5 inches thick. A Hayes or chilton manual is not even an inch thick. The extra money for OEM is worth it. It is much more detailed than the aftermarket manuals.

For what it is worth they are currently three sets of 94 manuals on ebay in the $75 range. I guess the older they get the more rare and valuable they are.
To me spending $75 to know you have the same info that was available to the mechanic working at the dealership when your car was new beats paying $15 for a manual that likely does not have what you are hunting.

There was one set for about $75. If you do not have an ebay account get one it is free. And get a paypal account for paying. I have now bought over 150 items on Ebay. I have never been ripped off and even if I was Ebay has buyer protection and by paying with a charge card you are protected.
All I am saying is that in my opinion it is well worth the extra money the factory manuals cost and that Ebay has been the cheapest source I have found to get them.

I paid a LOT less than that for the GM manuals used...
You know, setting up an ebay account is no harder than creating one here...
Here's the GM manuals:
