3.42's you can get in a z28 - easy to just swap the whole rear end.

If it's between the 3.73's and the 4.10's, we're really happy with the 4.10's but this isn't our daily driver. Just a summer car. But it really made 3rd gear on up much better! 1st is pretty much just gas it and spin the tire. Its a different car with the 4.10's.

Rear gears are al about give and take. The 4.10 give you a better launch but it will cost you fuel mileage and top end.

GM considered the 3:42 an all around good fit for the 3800 because they that is what they put in the Y87 performance package.

3:42's are what my '01 SS came with too, still on the fence about changing them out and what to go with if I do. Everyone says 4:10's but I'm not sure I want to go that low. I live in a rural area so not much city driving and I plan on some road trips of a few hundred miles one way and then back with this car. I think'n maybe 3:90's would be a good compromise, low enough to feel the difference but not so low they'd kill my highway driving mileage.

if your gona be highway driving go with 373 or 342. with 411s you will be turning about 2500 rpms at 60mph. with 370s my 93 with a 4l60 auto turns 2000rpms at 60.

I won't be doing a lot of highway driving, some but not a lot, mostly rural back roads but I do have a few trips I want to do. This is not a daily driver either so back and forth to work mileage isn't an issue. It's a 6 speed car and already has 3:42's which just seem too tall to me, I don't think 3:73's would be enough of a difference to bother doing and 4:10's maybe too far the other way but I could be wrong. That's why I'm thinking 3:90's might be the best compromise. I wish I knew someone with a 6 speed LS car that has 4:10's who could take me for a ride, or better yet let me drive.

i think most 3800 cars that dont have 3.42 have 3.23,is what my 99 has an if he has 3.23 gu5 rpo codes on drivers door, thats perfect ,my opion is 3.42 is the best for the road an a desent launch ,wich when i do my 95 that has 2.73 gu2, then go with 3.23 , to 3.42 with 31 spline gear will handle up to 550hp. with my 406 will be all i want for great take offs not that what the torq does not already make it feel like more my the codes are in the glove box an for 1995 you either got gu2 or gu5 ,my 3800 takes off just fine stock but for now lets get an update on the engine rebuild or swap

the 5 sp and auto doesnt have the extra overdrive. a few of the ls guys have used 411 with the 6sp and were happy. didnt lose as much mpg as they thought. i believe it was 4mpg loss on freeway and almost same for stop and go city crab. they just used 2nd as low gear.
