the shifter in my car bounces up and down when shifting what does that mean? it doesn't grind and it shifts fine. a buddy of mine has a 89 firbird that does the same. can anyone help?

 

Sounds like your tranny mount is busted.

I don't have experience with this first hand but a buddy of mine had the bolts strip on the shifter mount and the actual shifter became dislodged. He could still shift fine but he kinda had to hold it up himself to keep the stick from dropping down. Its possible its an easy fix.

 

40 or 50 bucks for parts and an hour or 2 of time. Not easy and not too hard. Gotta get the car in the air by jackstands or other means. Then have to jack the trans close to the tail section. Unbolt the three bolts held at the cross member and trans and swap it out with the new one.
Take your time and do it safely. Mine came with a broken one when I traded last year.

 

If you hear a thump when you take off then it's the trans mount. That thump would be the trans hitting the tunnel.

it does thump under the car when i take off or shift fast. sounds like it is the tranny mount. will go to the parts store this weekend.

any ideas on a site to order cheap performance parts?
and a good place to start for mods? The car is completly stock it has the 3" stainless steel exhuast already from factory and sounds about where i want it too, so...

 

there's a sticky about first mods in the 4th gen section, read that and it'll point you in the right direction.

 

ive got a different shifter question. i'm looking to replace my stock shift **** and dont know what the thread size is. ive got a stock 98 z28... please help

 

Amen.. I've had trouble finding any shift ***** in my town that'll fit. Mine came with a leather ball as a stock shifter.. not sure if that's stock or not.
