Default shifter help

i have a 2000 3.8 5speed. i just put in a hurst short shifer and when in second, it tends to slip out so i have to hold it there. i never had this problem with the old shifter. could it be because it's new and needs to loosen up a bit? it's installed securelly, i took it off and made sure the ball went in the bushing correctly but i still have the problem. any ideas?

I have a 99 3.8 5 speedand was thinking about getting a short shifter until I went to a transmission shop to have the transmission checked. I asked the guys what they thought about the short shifters and they said there are a lot of problems with them and wouldn't get one. They didn't go into detail but sounds like something they could have meant?
