Default Sevice Engine Soon light reads P0171 & P0174

Hey guys I need some help, I have a 2000 Z28 Camaro that I went to get inspected today and it failed![:@] My Service Engine Soon light had been flickering on and off for the past month but when I go have it tested of course it is on, but anyway the test shows that Codes P0171, P0174, P1133, and P1153 all failed. P0171 and P0174 mean that both banks of my engine are running too lean, which may be the cause for the codes P1133 and P1153 failers which are the O2 sensor codes. I know all of that, what I don't know is whatI need to fix or how to fix it, not cheaply but cheaper than any shop around here is willing to do. I am in the process of moving so money is a little tight right now so if I could fix the problem quickly and then go back and replace what is needed later would be great. Any ideas?

I think you have it backwards. I believe the P1133 and P1153 caused the other codes. O2 sensors adjust fuel trims, and if you're running lean, that's usually what to check first.

Most likely you have bad o2 sensors. I dont know how exactly they are set up on the ls1's but i have a 94 with the lt1 and for the passenger side the o2 sensor had a spot cut into the manifold for it so i didnt have room to put my 02 socket on it so i ended up taking a 7/8 in end wrench and cutting to be about 3 in long so i could have enough rooom to get on the o2 sensor and actually turn it out. and i think your around 65 to 70 a piece for Bosch. Hopefully this gives you some sort of idea

The PCM monitors the oxygen sensor activity for 60 seconds . During this period, the PCM counts the number of times that the O2sensor switches form rich to lean, and from lean to rich. A DTC P1133 or a DTC P1153 sets when the PCM determines that the O2 sensordid not switch enough times.

A lean-to-rich switch is determined when the O2 S voltage changes from less than 300 mV to more than 600 mV . A rich-to-lean switch is determined when the O2 S voltage changes from more than 600 mV to less than 300 mV . This diagnostic runs once per ignition cycle.

It would seem you have a problem with the upstream O2 sensors (lazy sensor, probably contaminated ). Engine probably running lean due to O2 sensor problem and causing the 0171- 0174 misfire codes. Not definite without proper test equipment, so you may also want to look at the ignition stuff, check for fouled plugs, and check fuel pressure.

Sorry I have not been able to get to a computer since we moved. Would any of you guys happen to have a diagram or pictures so I could see what I need to do? Is there any chance that I may not need to replace a sensor, I mean is there a way I can clean the ones I have to make them work. I mean money is TIGHT right now and these things look like they are going to cost at least $60 a piece and I may need up to 4, that could really hurt.

The only O2 sensors that would affect how the car runs, are the ones in the exhaust manifolds (2).

IF ITS THE o2 it might not work,,,but I,ll TELL you what i did,,,,MY Engine light was on and my 7thcylinderwas backfireing,,what I did was disconnect the battery for 20min,,,and then connect it back,,, ,,,I did that and It worked for me,,, When you have the battery disconnected it will take some time for the computer to recognize the problem with your car,,,,So when you will go back there again have the battery off overnight,,,then in the morning connect the battery when your ready to go,,,,drive to the station and keep your pants on,,,GOOD LUCK

arkomandos, I have heard of people doing that, but the guys inspecting their car tell them to go drive it for a bit and then come back. That is because when you disconnect the battery hook it back up, the PCMhas to relearn everything, and it will show you on a scan that some systems are not ready... You have to have driven the car for awhile for the PCM will let you know the systems are ready.

Read this (I know it is not Cheverolet, but it is the same pretty much)... http://apps.volvocars.us/ownersdocs/...Inspection.pdf

wow I did not know that,,,,well I did it and it worked for me,,,but I did not go the second time,,,The first time I went and it worked fine,,,Well yea your right about the PCM,,,but it will take a long time of driving for the PCM to read everything correctly,,,I think it also depends on the state you live in,,,,,,,,,I know California is nuts with their inspections,,,,,I live in IL so its a little better,,,
