I just changed my brakes today and I'm getting a scraping sound from the front drivers side. Almost positive it's due to a warped rotor and I'm wondering what I'm looking at to replace that. In the past, rotors have literally slipped on when I was working on my previously ownedvehiclesbut I noticed this one wasn't loose like other vehicles I'm used to working on. Do I simply need to take that bracket that holds the break pads in place off or is there something more to it. Thanks for any help.

 

unbolt the caliper, pull off the rotor. are you sure its not the new pads rubbing?

 

First try braking in the new pads.. Go about 20 MPH and hit the brakes hard.A hand full of hard stops quickly help. Do this a few times. It will break in the pads nicely.

If your rotors are warped, you will feel it in the pedal when when you are trying to stop during normal driving. The pedal will pulsate from the high and low spots on the rotor.

 

exactly. I was thinking its probably just new pads as well. Mine did that last time i replaced them.

 

i heard, to break in breaks, you start @ 10MPH, brake hard, then go to 20 and brake hard, then 30, and brake mediocrely(sp? lol), then 40, and brake mediocre, then 50, mediocre, then 60, mediocre...

and you'd deffently feel it if your rotor was warped. shutters and shimmy's sooo bad.

 

never heard of breaking in breaks

 

lol. yea. and after you brake them in, your also s'pose to drive for like 10-15 miles on a highway or something. and NOT use them, so they can cool.

 

High speeds and hard breaking causes warped rotors. The process I explained on breaking in new pads is how I was taught when I went through a week of brake school 10 years ago outside of Syrcuse N.Y. It was taught by Raybestos and GoodYear. So, not to sound cocky, this is how I have always done it and have never had a problem.

 

the surfaces dont mate quite right when both pads and rotors are new. it feels almost as if you have no brakes at all

 

Yeah I always just go out anddo a couple of reallyhard stops after I replace pads\rotors to break the surfacesin.Not rocket science but very neccessary.
