I have looked for, and can't seem to find answers, hoping someone can help. I want a posi for my car, (02, V6), but I am not sure as the rear end. is it a 7.5" w/ 28 spline axles? what kind of posi is it? Gov-lok style? what vehicles would carry a rearend that i could use?

It is indeed a 7.5" but I don't remember if they're 28 or 30 spline axles. I want to say 28 but I'm not 100% sure.

The units are either a Auburn or Torsen. Obviously you know some stuff about rear ends so you know Auburn units are prone to problems. The Torsen units however can take a lot more abuse. You can use either rear but I would thoroughly advice a Torsen unit from a 99-02 SS/Z28. Try to get one with 3.42s installed already if you can.

You can use any rear from a 93-02 Camaro. The V6s normally carry open differentials unless they're Y87 equipped cars which came with a limited slip with 3.42s. All of the V8 cars carry limited slip differentials.

Not sure on the Gov-Lock since I've never owned a truck with one in it.

Just grab a differential from a 93-02 V8 car and you'll have it easy

@ evilkal- thanks for the answer, that's what i was looking for. i basically wanted to know if i could use a v8 car's diff. i thought they had a 8.5" ring gear though. either way, i am going to broaden my search. if i could get my hands on a set of 3.73's i would prefer that

^^ yeah as evilkal said just get a v8 rear. I'd second the think about torsen vs auburn, but i prefere the lock out of the auburn verses the torsen

You will have 28 spline axle shafts. Installing a LIMITED SLIP (to you posi) is a big buck item and NOT for DIY type of job. Replacing the entire rear would be the least expenvive option and any rear from 1993/2002 Z28 (they all have LS) will fit.

i thought gm quit using the 28 spline shaft and switched to the 30 on the 4th gen. if u have traction control u will want a traction control rearend. 93 to 02 have the same dimentions but some are abs (3 sensors one on rear)and some are traction control (4 sensors two on rear).

You are incorrect.....Axle shafts were changed from 26 to 28 splines in 1989/90 and continued to be 28 splines on all 4th gen 10-bolt (V6 & v8) to the end of the model run in 2002.

@blackz87, i think it would be much easier to swap the carrier as opposed to the whole rearend. i have done my share of rearends before, so setting it up is not an issue. as i can get my hands on a rearend for under $100, that is the way to go for me. the chances of me finding a complete axle for a reasonable price around here is very slim. anyways, have to hunt and see what i can find.
