Exclamation Rear main question

So the reassembling of Sofie's engine is starting later today (just waiting for the reman heads to come in yet) and Case was going to start on the bottom end awhile. Well according to some directions, he needs to use a special tool to install the rear main. So the question is, do you need one, or is there another way of making it work without destroying it? We already asked at Auto Zone and Advanced Auto for any kind of tool to buy/rent and we got looks of 'What language did you just speak?' they didn't have the slightest clue what we were talking about (they were young kids working). So if we need one, is that a dealer-only thing? It's getting frustrating trying to find this tool. We haven't tried Napa yet, but I thought it would save some time by asking here after the first two failed attempts of locating it.

The tool shown looks to be needed only if you are putting a seal in an engine that is already assembled. If you can lift your crank up you should be able to get the seal on the crank, line it up with the bearing caps and put it all together in one fell swoop without the tool. I have put one piece main seals in before and so long as you get them in even no special tools have been needed.

Thanks guys. So then the question is, does it have to be installed to a certain depth? Case said it looks like it does (I have no clue on this one) so that's why a tool was needed?

There should be a groove or flange that will put hte seal at the proper depth. The tool as best as I can tell is only for assembled engines. I called my local Chevy dealer and they say most of the guys can get the seal in without the tool you just have to be careful with it and get it in even.

i took at look at the rear cover, there is no lip, groove, flange, or any sort of marking on it to indicate its correct depth other than the discoloration that i scuffed off. so its just a guess as to how deep it has to go?

depth should not be that big an issue. the important thing is that it is straight. if its not the crank will pull sideways on the seal and wear it out fast.
