Default Rear End Question

Hello,

I have a 98 SS with very limited miles (31,000). I was under the car (it was on a lift) and noticed some old oil around the rearend and started poking around. The yoke coming out of the rear end can be rotated about a 1/4" while holding the drive shaft in place. It seems a like a little too much play. Is this normal? The rearend is not making any noises and the U-joints are fine. Any thoughts? By the way, it has the stock rearend. I did not order the optional Auburn from SLP when I originally ordered the car in 1998.

The yoke is attached to the driveshaft with the "U" joint. If you can hold the driveshaft while moving the yoke it means the U joint is bad. Maybe you meant that you could move the yoke while holding both axle shafts, in which case 1/4" is acceptable.

Thanks, I was talking about the yoke. I had the rearend checked and was told the backlash was 7/1000. 3 to 8/1000th is acceptable. Thanks again....
