Rack & Pinion
I need a Rack for my 93 Z. Its shot. My local junk yard has one from a 2000 SS (this is the close ratio one) with under 50K on it. They want $150 and $45 for the U-joint that would replace my rag joint. Anyone know of a better place to get a rack? I want the close ratio Rack. These where installed on Y87 cars and I think all LS1 cars. A reman rack would be great if I can find one resonably priced.

They want a lot for a used unit don't they. A reman AC Delco rack (minus the u-joint) for a 2000 SS is $202 at rockauto.com. An AC Delco replacement for your year is $143 with either a 2.75 or 2.25 turns model available. How many turns is the 2000 lock to lock?

I'm curious, what are the indications that your rack is shot?
Can you explain what is meant by a "close rack"? I thought there were two versions, one on the base V6 with a basic turn ratio, and a tighter turn ratio on the V8s & Y87s. What am I missing?

There is about 1 inch of play in the steering wheel that track down to the rack and pinion. Close ratio rack is the shorter rack or smaller ratio.
Do you have a link for the AC delco? I think the 2.25 is the rack I want. The local yard is Fbodys in Philly, its a big one, I can not believe they are asking more then a reman.

Are you implying all Z28s did not receive the close ratio racks then? I thought they did?

I had a link to a post that listed the cars that did and did not have it. The thing I remember was that all LS1 Z had it. I will see if I can find it.

LOL, I should have looked harder even autozone has remans for $142 with the 2.25 ratio. I'll bet the wife can find a $20 off coupon,,,

Hey Gorn, check out what these folks say about remans, buyer beware... I've read the GM remans are good, though.

Also, check this link:

Reportedly the ratios are: V6 one is 16.9:1, the V8 14.4:1.
Anyone have the factory code handy for the "close ratio" rack?

Here is the thread I was thinking about. There is a some miss information in there but they get it straight in the end. Note how old the thread is. I read it 3 years ago.
There are only two designs V8 and V6 its the joint that was changed for the LS1.
