I am wondering if anyone here has had this problem. I have a 97 Z/28 convertible I ordered new. My drivers side power window suddenly stopped going all the way down and after a few minutes it will go the rest of the way. Putting it up is the same. It goes part way up and stops then a few minutes later it goes up a bit more and then after a wait it will finish going the rest of the way up. I thought it was the switch so I replaced the switch. That didn't help. Would it be the motor itself causing the problem? Thanks in advance.

That is caused by a failure of one of two parts.

The easiest to check and replace is the small "Windows" circuit breaker in the inside fuse panel. It trips when the current is too high and resets after a few minutes of cooling time. You can get a new one at almost any parts store.

If that doesn't work, there is a very small circuit breaker inside the window motor itself that also trips when it gets overheated and self-resets after cooling. Try greasing the window mechanism tracks first (worked for me). Otherwise you will need a new window motor. The circuit breaker inside the motor is not easy to replace.

 

OK, just one question on this? If it were this circuit breaker wouldn't it cause the passenger side to do the same thing? The passenger side window goes up and down with no problems. Thanks.

In theory, yes. But each motor can draw a different amount of current depending on it's condition and the condition of the window tracks. A defective breaker may have a reduced level trip point that is lower than the worst window. The breakers are cheap, but you can skip this step if money is more important than labor and time. Swapping it with the Defogger breaker is also an option unless that one is degraded also.

it's the window motor. I've had my 95Z for over 6 years. The symptoms you described were what both windows were doing. I replaced both motors and have already had to replace one of the replacements

 

regulator with motor is like $49.00 ,yes same thing hear they ,don't make them so you can crease them you.r7self ,get a pop rivet gun for the job

 

tigx2 sure sounds like the motor is getting tired. i found oem regulators a few years back. changed the driver side right away and waited for my passenger side to go all the way. have a look at 14 here https://camaroforums.com/forum/93-02...rt-here-38462/ not hard to just change motor.

 

While it is very possible that the window motor is defective, don't jump to the conclusion that you need a new one just yet. I have owned my 98 T/A since it was new, so have good history on it. When the driver side window started to slow down, I ordered a replacement motor. While waiting for it's arrival, I removed the door panel and re-greased the window tracks. The performance immediately improved a lot. That was several years ago. The replacement window motor is still in the original package in my garage. Both window motors in my car are the originals after 17 years of use.

 

Mine are both original as I said in my first post I ordered mine. I will check the circuit breaker this afternoon. Meanwhile I checked on Rock Auto and they have AC/Delco replacement motors for $28.00. My window guy will replace it for me for $60.00 labor. If I end up having to replace the motor I will have him do it for me. I don't bend like I used to although I may go ahead and pull the door panel and see if I can do it.

 

$60 labor is a good price for that job. I would be very tempted to just let him replace it and grease the tracks while doing so. See the link craby posted. Not too difficult, but a bit time consuming. Doesn't require removing the regulator also.
