Default Question about my Exhaust... ideas please

I have a 1999 Camaro V6 3.8L. The guy i bought the car from told me he had a flowmaster "FULL" exhaust installed on the car, i didnt actually look underneath to see what it looked like. Well the exhaust on the car is a bunch of different pipes like welder together, it looks like crap it sounds nice as long as you dont rev it up to high, or if you shift at a high RPM it rattles and sounds very bad. Idling sounds fine.
Well my question is, seeing as it has to cat, and i can't tell where the cat used to be... I want to buy and install a new catback exhaust, even if i could buy an exhaust and cut the old one and use a clamp or something to connect the new one to the old one.
I looked online for exhaust systems, but they're all full exhaust systems or catback, and i can't really afford a full exhaust at the moment.
I would like to go with a catback, then get headers.
Could somebody tell me where the cat is normally located, and possibly give me some ideas on what i should do, or what you would do?

I appreciate any help, and ideas.
Thanks

The cat would go under the front floor pan on the passenger side right where that hump is where the passenger's feet would rest. If there is no cat underneath, I'd suspect your SES light would be on due to a code being thrown by the O2 sensor. Unless the previous owner installed an O2 sim or had the computer programmed to not look for that O2 issue.

What I'd do would be to throw a catalytic converter back on it and look for the best aftermarket cat-back system that you can afford. Be it from Magnaflow, Borla, or somebody else.

The cat on the 3.8 is on the I pipe. There is a S pipe right after the cat (usually where a catback starts).

The I pipe? I didnt know there was an I pipe, unless you're referring to the Y pipe?

Sorry, I mean it goes right after the Y pipe merge, right before the S shaped pipe.

That's what I was thinking, is there any system I can get that just connects to the Y pipe?
I don't want a cat.

I don't believe so. Most exhausts are catbacks, and therefoer are everything after the cat. You could either gut the cat, or replace it with a straight pipe.

If I had a cat I would just gut it, but I don't have one lol. I already have an exhaust on my car, but when I rev it go get on it it makes this loud rattling noise like something stuck inside my exhaust. A couple of my friends said it's just the exhaust itself if that's the case I want a new one then.

I'm really thinking about working on getting a z28 or an SS, I want the V8 sound and performance.
It's something I'm definatly looking into. I have to sell mine first or hit the lottery.
