Check for codes first.

 

i dont have a code reader but the service engine soon light and the brake lights are on

 

Well that's where to start, the codes will tell you what's wrong with the engine. You can get them checked at any auto parts store. And the brake light is probably the parking brake not seated all the way or the switch is broken.
