Default Parking Brake Handle

Well, I had the great idea of replacing the leather part of my parking brake handle. I took it off and the button and rod with the spring on it shot out. My issue is that I can not reinstall the rod properly.

The rod has an L shape on the bottom that needs to hook in behind the lever that holds the handle in the up position. I can't seem to figure out how to get it behind that lever. Has anyone accomplished this before?

I did take a look through the manuals section but was unable to find any information. It is a 94.

there is a link to factory service manual for a 94 camaro there that links you to here My Files if you download 94fb and look in book 1 at page 585 or 5f-2 there is some info and pic that shows a spring, i think its the same one. could also look in the parts manual, http://performanceworks1.com/PDF%20F...s%20Manual.pdf these are not small files so make sure you have memory

Thanks for all the info. I stumbled upon the way to get the handle back together. You have to lift the handle all the way up and then it slides in fairly easily.
