Default Opinion's needed

Hello all don't think I've mentioned this yet but a few weeks ago on my way home from work I was rearended. Well my car is totaled and I need a new one. I've been thinking about getting a 4th gen camaro or firebird. I've never owned one and don't know anyone with one either. If I do get one it's either going to be the lt1 v8 or 3.8 v6. I'm just concerned about how bad the gas milage really is. I've done some research and for the lt1 it seems like it varies a lot between what ppl are saying they get. I don't mind getting around 19-20 mpg I just want to know what I might expect to get. Also is there any problems with certain years that maybe I should stay away from. I'm not looking to buy this car as a project just a dd. I want something not horrible on gas but can still get up to speed on the highway. I welcome your opinions! Thanks

depends on what body style you like. 93-97 or 98-02. i have no complants on gas milage. im still getting 18 to 21 with mine and thats with built motor and 370 gears. keep in mind big city is a long ways from me. 3.8 will get around 30 on highway, i have gotten 28 with my first 93. best ive got with this one was 25 before build or gear change.

Mine's an '02 V-6 5 speed EPA puts it at 29 hiway I'd say that's pretty accurate. Plenty of pep for everyday driving, and them some. Haven't had mine long enough to testify to reliability, but as I dig deeper into the V-6 Camaro world,I find a lot of them that suffer from blown head gaskets. Mine is fine at 147K on the odometer. I don't know if this is from neglect or abuse or design flaw, all I know is it makes me treat mine a little nicer and check the oil more often. Maybe some other forum members can weigh in here.

True I do a combination of city and highway driving. If I can get 18 to 21 I'd be happy with that after all I was only getting 21 in my gtp. I like the 93-97 body style better for the camaro but the firebird the 98-02 is better. I'm starting to lean toward the 98-02 firebird just cause I like it more and it's just a newer car.

I had an 01 Camaro 3.8l 5spd and must say it was definitely a fun car especially after putting a few bucks in mods. Nothing crazy but made it a blast to drive and a good dd. IMO I say go for the 98-02 firebird if you are more concerned with getting good gas mileage. You sound as if its not that much of an issue with the #'s you had, which then I would say go for the v8 this way you get great stock car that gets up and goes and have more options to upgrade/mod if you decide to in the future and can continue to get mpg #'s that are within your acceptance range (As long as you don't get peddle happy). Just my $.02

I own a V8 and I'm a college kid...so that should tell you something about the gas mileage right there. Hahah. It isn't bad actually. Just slightly worse than my old 3100 Buick. I think I'm getting 15 around town and 20ish out on road trips. I also need to replace the oxygen sensors though so that contributes to the poor mpg. Just remember to put minimum of 91 octane in it if you get the LT1. Anything less and your wasting money.

I love my 96 3800/5speed. enough power to not be boring and 29-30 MPG across the whole tank, Mostly highway.

I am going to be upgrading to Lt1 6 speed soon. IThe stick helps a lot with MPG

Thanks for the input now I just have to get on the net and really start searching for what I want. I guess it's going to come down to what I find there.

I drive a 2002 Z28 with the ls1 and 4l60e auto. I just figured my gas mileage on thursday and am getting 20.5mpg, but as with all cars it depends on how much lead is in your right shoe.
