Default oil .consumtion

ok this is about how much oil you use over time ,not what kinda oil is best ,an, what is normal ,.my lt1 used about 2 quarts a year ,I would use stp to fill the gap 4 times a year,so the point is all cars burn oil ,how much does yours burn per year without being a problem ,mine is based on .5000 miles changes ,the 3000 miles i.is for those who .drive there car hard.an I use stp,my lt1 held 5 .quarts .an my 406 holds 5 .but then seems to take about 5.5 quarts ,I have burned one quart since I fired it up ,I wonder is 8 quart pan would be better ,an .about 2500. miles now on the 406 is that to much,i did the breakin oil an it was changed now ..2 times, the oil it still very clean no metal chips ,they were .there was only a little at breakin .with over a year on the warranty I want to make sure its not to much, its probley time for another change too for best breakin,I wonder to if dip stick can make a difference its on the drivers side ,then the 406 is .said to run hot too ,is why I went with 3 core 20/50

i dont burn any oil. i do have a slow leak around the pan plug that leaks about a quart a year. usually get through to oil change using one or less.

Burning more oil then average in the first 3000 miles of a new engine is normal. GM says up to a quart per 1000 miles is considered normal. I would say a quart every 2500 miles is not worth chasing down. Of course if you are racing all the time then you need to change it a lot more and the engine will consume more oil.

The 3800 in my 01 goes through 1-1/2 to 2 quarts in about 5k miles. This isn't the first time I've seen it stated that 1 qt per 1k miles is acceptable by gm standards. Is there a valid reason for the oil consumption or is it just a design flaw?

that standard is not any good in this day and age. in the 50s and 60s even the 70s yes even with low miles a engine could go through a quart every thousand miles. with the 97 van and 15 truck (so far, just passed 2k) i go 5k miles (mobil1 synthetic) without adding any.

There could be a couple of reasons for oil loss. The easy one to over look is that when the oil is change, the oil pan bolt gasket (seal) isn't replaced causing a slow oil loss.

Another oil loss scores is the seal between the engine and transmission. If you had this seal replace, it may not have been installed correctly. Chevy has issued a warning memo about this.
