You will need a scanner that can read the J1850 protocol to communicate with the GM OBD II system.

Torque app on android and the kiwi bluetooth scanner, real time diagnostics and fault codes. Total price of around $120 USD

American Mussel, the problem is that your reader is a CAN bus reader for 2005+ cars. Return it if you can.

I like the Innova which is about $45. I like the emission statues which most readers don't have. Solutions to codes are available on the internet so you don't need an expensive one.

Innova make OBD1 and OBD2 readers. My other "car" is a 94 K2500 truck which is OBD1. The Innova reader I have reads both OBD1 and OBD2. It was more than $45 though. I think I paid $125 for it.

Alex,
There is nothing incorrect about the scanner you have. It is an OBD2 AND CAN scanner, not just CAN. Most handhelds are both types. I know because I have one exactly like it and it works fine on both my 1998 T/A (OBD2-J1850) and my wife's 2010 Hyundai (CAN).
If it cannot connect, you may have a bad connection at the socket, or a defective scanner.
