Default OBD2 in my 98 Z28

Hi all,

I just bought an OBD2 scanner and it didn't work unfortunately.

Car Engine Scanner Diagnostic Reset Tool OBD 2 CAN BUS EOBD Fault Code Reader UK | eBay

This is what I bought and it trys to connect but after going through some systems like CAN and others it says scanning error.

Can anyone says for certain

1. What scanner (if any under the really expensive ones) will work with my 98 z28 (and hopefully I can get it in the UK)
2. What is your experience with that scanner?

Thanks

Alex

You may have a communication error due to a blown fuse. The ALDL port normally gets it's power through the cigarette lighter/auxiliary power outlet. Check all your fuses while you're at it.

We are talking about Engine control and not Air bag or ABS?

Your 1998 is FULLY OBD2 and should work with ANY OBD2 scanner. If it is not working then there is an issue with the scanner or the car.

The only year with OBD2 issues is 95, some where OBD2 with OBD1 connector. There was some bugs with 1996's but they should connect right.

There is no cheap wat to connect to ABS and Air bags systems as those systems where not OBD2 at that point, Only the higher end scanners will talk to them.

FYI the cheapst way to talk to an OBD2 system is to just add a Ebay Cable to your lap top and use the free software.

You have a CAN BUS scanner which reads differently than older OBDII scanners. You need one for Pre can bus cars.

Hi all,

thanks for the comments, much appreciated.

To answer the points list

1. the 12v accessory sockets work and the obd has power i believe, as it powers up the device so can we rule that out?

2. Yes i have seen the cables that connect to the laptop and the the cds with the software, is that a good idea over the device? any advantages?

3. "You have a CAN BUS scanner which reads differently than older OBDII scanners. You need one for Pre can bus cars."

Is that the scanning protocol? Does the camaro use VPN or is that something different?
What is the protocal pre can bus?

Thanks guys

I like the laptop cause there are so many things you can do with it.

There are a lot of different softwares you can get for free and some goodpay to play ones also.

This is the free software I got with my cable , I have upgraded since this. Even with the free stuff you get to look at a lot of inputs at the same time. Most scan tools you have to page abck and forth.
