Default Newbie looking for some engine swap help for a 96 Z28

Well im new here just looking for some info, my friend offered to sell me his 96 z28 camaro for $1k but the engine is taken apart and it has no wheels. My question is this which engine can i swap into this badboy? Would a LS1 swap be possible? Maybe a LS2? I have atleast $5k to work with here so its either this or turbo my grand am yeah i know my gay little v6 is no match for a z28 camaro but those are my two routes lol

Anything is possible. But if the 5K is the enough depend on you. The Lt1 to LS1 convertion is not as easy as it sounds. You could get everything used and do all the work yourself. It will be a big job. OR you could buy a brand new LT4 motor to replace the LT1 motor then you can spend money making the car faster with a new motor rather then spending a ton of work/money just getting a used motor to run right. Lt4 motor upgrade the PCM to a 97 and get a copy of HPtune and you are ready to mod

I think if you research it the LT1 base engine mods almost as well as the LS1 motor. Your buget sounds pretty tight for a LS2 motor concidering you will need either a doner LS1 car or a ton of camaro/LS1 parts If you buy the parts sepratly it will add up quick.

Normally a jump from 285 to 350 would not require a tranny upgrade right away but if you have it out and take to the shop you can save yourself some cash. Also if that tranny had already seen one LT1 come and go chance are its not in rock solid shape.

You will blow thru your 5K pretty quick by the time you add in a misc stuff you should replace on the motor. So if you buy the Lt4 clone and its $3400 shipped add another $1000 for the tranny. That leaves you with $600 by the time you get plugs, wires, water pump, Opti, motor mounts and hoses you will be right about there or just a tad over.

A member on the forum is selling a used LT4 from a totaled corvette, you'd just have to swap the accesorries off the LT1! I was planning on buying this motor but couldnt scrounge up the money. You should def check it out.

I would recommend buying an LT1 for cheaper and using the saved money for engine mods. The power difference between the LT1 and the LT4 is not worth the extra money you pay to have the LT4.

The car i might buy the engine is no good and well the body is in good shape. He is willing to sell to me for 1k but i dont think tis worth it since it has no wheels either. Im just looking for something that would do me good.

Why would you put in a 350TPI, have to change out all the computer equipment, cut the cowl to make room...

Needless to say that idea makes no sense at all..
