New project

Im looking to get a 383 ls engine and didnt know what would I be looking at price wise? I called a very reputable performance shop and they quoted me $3,499 for a short block and I could choose my choice of high or low compression and some other things. Any help would be welcome cuz I'm gonna use this to further my automotive knowledge and build a beast engine in the process.

thats about right if they supply the block and the parts are high quality.

Ok thank you. Also if I decided to get a 350 ls would you think it would cost more to machine it and sell the short block parts that won't fit and replace them with correct parts. Like pistons ect.

the ls is a completely different motor. im not sure any parts would be interchangeable.

But isnt the 383 just a milled 350? Someone was selling an ls6 383 ci. block. I was guessing ls6's were either that way or it was milled

craby 01-03-2011 07:23 PM

yes it is stroked in the same manor as a 350 or lt1. thing is almost all the bolt patterns are different, head shape and design are different and cid is different than the 350 or lt1.

so basicaly what i see is that it would be easier to get an ls 383 and get parts for that than buy a 350 part it out and mill it and buy new parts for it.

just fyi this is not all happening all right now im gettin my list together on what i will be needing and getting into before i just go and buy an engine and tranny.

if you are planning on replacing the lt1 in your 95 you will need more than a motor and trany. as i said the ls is a completely different motor. you will need a donor car.

thetal1 01-03-2011 08:18 PM

My car is a 3.4. I understand that more than a complete engine and tranny will be needed. Like a new comp, k-member, fuel pump, most likely interior gauges and even possibly custom wiring but I understand what will need to be done cuz a few other people i met have done the swap.

But mainly I'm trying to stick with ls not lt engine for this

ahhh ok now i understand. yah if your gona change all the stuff anyways its a good idea to go with the more advanced motor and systems. so what you need to find is a wrecked ls car with a 383 motor. dk had a great setup that he sold not to long ago, that would have been a good one.
