New member -Several questions
Hello all- New member here (just an old guy-with a new toy). Super excited about my newly acquired 2000 convertible Z-28. Came to me with a "new" motor (LS1) with claimed 59,000 miles. Seems to run good, but have a few issues. Here Goes; 1.) the serpentine belt squeaks like crazy. Replaced the belt and was OK for just a few days, then started to squeak again. Use of spray on belt dressing stops it but not for long. When I changed the belt, I checked the pully's and they seemed to spin free with no grinding etc. Anybody ever had the same problem ? I here they make a special belt with "cross hatches" cut in. Anybody know where to get one ? 2.) I checked the overflow coolant tank and got all shook up. The dip stick was coated with thick black goo. I opened the radiator tank cap and all looked well with just clear coolant visible. Is this something I need to be super concerned about ? Hope not, that would ruin my day if I just bought a POS. Have more but that's all for now Thanks.
belt tensioner is most likely not happy. gunk in coolant tank is probably from the engine that was replaced. can always take tank out and wash it clean. don't try to get pipe out the rubber seal can go to pieces. welcome to the forum. enjoy

Thanks craby. I was thinking that same thing about gunk in overflow bottle. If the new motor has been in for only a few weeks, it couldn't have built up that much gunk. I will try to flush it out without taking the tank out. Looks like a ***** of a job being below the battery tray and all. Thanks again.

Just a FYI these cars tend to not coolant flush well. When I replaced the engine in my project 96 I had a small amount of the dark brown stuff before I started. I flushed the new to me low miles engine with a garden hose then I remover the radiator and overflow and flushed that. I did a very good job on both. Way better then could ever be done in a car. Sure enough after the first test drive, gunk in the overflow. The car was fine, in fact I drove that car an additional 100,000 miles over 6 years and she was running like a top on the day I sold it. .
BTW May have solved two problems at once. That belt squeak I talked about...…..well I have an oil leak as well. Followed the oil leak back all the way to what I think is the P.S. pump. Still need to look harder, but I wiped everything down and will try to verify its really the pump. That would explain the belt getting a good dose of P/S. fluid causing the squeak. Is replacing the P.S. pump a hard job for a shade tree mechanic ? Where to get an inexpensive one ? Thanks
you will need a power steering pump pulley puller. https://www.harborfreight.com/pulley...AaAndYEALw_wcB other than that its not to tuff to do. you can not get a new pump, they is all rebuilt now. I put a oil cooler on the power steering system for my 93 and have not had issues with it sense. I believe the 2000 already has one.
