Default New member needs some knowledge about service engine light!!!

Ok i bought my 96 ss it is car number 1654 red with t-tops basically my dream carin may and love it very much but i keep having the same problem with this car. The service engine light came on so i had it checked and the code came up e.g.r valve. Took it to my mechanic and long story short he told me that there are too many after-market parts on my car and that the valve was working fine. The previous owner told me he had got the same ses pop up when he had thought he had recieved a bad tank of gas and he was just about to change out the egr. So my question is: Is my mechanic a re-tard i personally think he is. and 2 are service engine lights a problem with these cars i keep hearing they are. Also my car keeps telling me i have low coolant but the water is perfectly fine does that mean i have a faulty sensor? Keep in mind the car runs like new but i can't seem to get these lights off!!

yes u have a faulty sensor all you have to do is unplug it and make sure to keep an eye on your coolant . I have several aftermarket parts and I have no check engine light. I think your mechanic may be a tard.

exhaust work shouldnt trigger an EGR code. what i would expect from that work would be an O2 sensor related code, either cats not workng or a temp code if you have high flow cats with LT's.

If you unhook the computer..for a few min, the light will go out, cheaper then fixing the problem.

so i have emissions coming up in nov. but i want to try to nip this problem in the butt before then so would changing out that e.g.r fix the ses. There is nothing i would love more than to make this sensor go away. My ss has a build sheet and never had cats and has bbk headers so would that have anything to do with the light? and yes i need to find a better mechanic anybody here live in phx?

I'm from PHX, AZ if that's where your talking about. I currently live in El Mirage AZ but I'm in Phoenix all the time. What I would suggest is find out all of the performance parts that the previous owner installed on the car before taking it back to the shop. This way you know exacly what's on the car so you can explain exacly what the issue is and they may be able to link to one of the performance parts you have on the car that may be causing your problem. Second take to a place that knows a little somthing about performance engines!! The only reason I say that is because most mechanics have basic knowledge of engines and some know nothing about performance parts which we all know can alter the way engines run and the computer may not like what those parts are trying to tell it. I had that same issue when I first installed my engine in my car and no local mechanics could help me. Emissions!! I got desperate to get the car to pass and took it to a Pepboys! Haha! They called me back to tell me that they could not work on my car because someone installed a Corvette engine in the car. I tried to explain to him that was then engine that came with the car. He was no help! Sorry for the long post!
