Next oil change, stay away from Fram. Their oil filters are cheaply produced, and I wouldn't even run one on an old civic. Stick with Puralator, Wix, Napa Gold, Mobile 1, K&N, Amsoil, and STP.

Right, the "orange" Fram filters are cheap junk, mostly due to a bad bypass design that can bypass the oil when you don't want it to. The TG Fram filters however, are good.
I like to use STP filters which were rated very well. And STP is the very same filter as AC.

Right. There is no failsafe on the "leaf spring" bypass design, meaning if you go a little over on your oil change, the filtered particles could be back draining right back into the pan. Also, they are manufactured with cardboard ends, and the casings are extremely thin. My brother actually had one burst at a seam before.

The TG filters are better, and acceptable, but for what you pay for one, the other options are around the same price if not cheaper and MUCH better.

It would be safer to have the car towed home so you don't run it more with that filter on it!
Just kidding, but I would swap it out if it was my car.
I wouldn't even use those on my lawn mower engine (if it took a filter).
Will the trans shop let you do it there while it's up in the air?

I dunno, will you? I wouldn't worry about it if you just put it on. Since you just got the car anyways, change the oil again after 1 or 2 thousand miles, and put a better filter on.

EDIT: Dang, 69 beat me too it, haha.

Good thing you went with the rebuild. Although they would have a tuff time saying it was something else when you didn't even make it home. It is possible its a quick fix but don't be surprised if the tranny needs to come back out.
