You're looking at a good amount of custom work to get the engine to mount, as well as a plethora of sensors and electrical stuff. I believe the LS2/LS3 are also slightly taller than the LS1/LS6, so you may have some clearance issues. You'd be better off going with an LS1 or LS6 because you know they're going to fit in the car, but they're also going to come with mounting issues as well as a bunch of electrical stuff.

LT1383 stroker ftw. you can find some for under 6 grand i believe with 440hp. No mounting issues there.

You can push the LT1 up to 11.5:1 compression on pump gas because the heads are cooled first, GM did that on purpose to allow high compression. If you get a tune you should be fine with premium.

The motors displacement isn't going to effect how easily you get pinging. You can get a 1.5L to ping if you have high enough compression and the heads are getting hot etc. So yes, even with a 396...

Here, just to prove to you that I'm not blowing smoke up your ***, have a link to Golen Engine Services.

http://www.golenengineservice.com/html/lt1_lt4.html

Take a look at the motor that's second from the bottom, you'll see that it's a 396 with 11.5:1 compression and runs on 91 octane pump gas.

Will an LS1 fit under the hood of a 93-97? I thought i read somewhere that it was a little higher than the LT1 and that was one of the reasons for the new front end. The hood on the 98+ is higher..

EDIT:
Just found it.. its from Camarosource.
Camaro's received a new hood, light settings (headlights were now flush with the car rather than set inside headlight pockets) and nose, (nose now rounded rather than at a point) .primarily to accommodate the LS1 which is slightly taller than the LT1.

Not saying the LS1 won't fit under the hood, but maybe there could be clearance issues.. Might need a new hood for an LS1..

Would having a 98-02 body style make any difference?

As previously stated, the 98-02 body style have a slightly taller clearance to clear the LS1, but that doesn't take away from the fact that you're still going to need a lot of work to get the LS2 that you're looking at into the car. You're still going to need engine mounts, electronics etc. Like I recommended previously, go with an LS1 or LS6 since it has the same dimmensions for the block and heads, as well as all the same mounting points as an engine that came in that generation of car. You're best bet is to find a wrecked LS1 donor Camaro to get the parts from.
