Scanner! We don’t need no stinking Scanner!
Got a paper clip? Jump one connector to the other and count the blinking light. With the engine not running the first code you will see is 12. That is one blink a pause then two blinks. It will repeat that 3 times. After that it will blink out any stored codes.

Ok something stange is going on and i cant put my finger on it. If I put the clip where it should go before turning the car to the on position the light doesnt come on at all, If I put it in after it is in the on position the light stays solid and does not flash. Any ideas on this?

Turn the key on first do not start it. The light should go on. Then jump the connectora second or two afterlight should start blinking.

Sure you are jumping the right connectors? Do you have a aftermarket chip in the ECM? Most cars that will not flash a 12 is because the diagnostic side of the ECM is fried.

I work on the OBD1 systems but only up until 1989 at that point just the vets where programmable and that was by the factory. I have no idea if having a reprogrammed chip could cause the system not to work. When I would get a car in to work onthat have a aftermaket prom I had to switched it back to the stock one because it would not give me any codes. I can't really help anymore, sorry
