i was just wondering if i change mufflers, get one that flows a little better and leave the rest of my exhaust alone except for headers then which set of headers would give me the most power gain, long tubes os shorties?? Thanks

 

I believe long tubes would give you better power gains.

 

see the reason i ask is because ive been told that with a basically stock set up shorties are better i just want to be sure before i purchase them. and ive heard they are hard to install on a ls1 is this true?

 

LT ftw. Ive never heard shorties being good for anything... even when i was on the mustangforums.

 

A shortie header paired with a mandrel bent Y pipe will give you about the same HP as a Long Tube header, the difference is really in torque, which the long tubes give you a good advantage over the shorties, especially in the low end. The only reason I could see purchasing shorties is if you live in California, in which case it's illegal to have long tubes on the car, or if all you plan to do is put the headers on to get rid of your rusted stock manifolds. You will get very little gains with a shorty header if you don't have a good Y pipe for it to flow into. In my opinion, if you have to change out the Y pipe anyway, you may as well go for the gold and go all out. Just my $0.02

 

thanks for the info i will probably go with the long tubes i just hope that there not as hard as ive been told they are to install.

 

long tubes are always a pain in the ***. usually its just getting to the the back bolts. be patient, u will be working with 5 degree wrench turns on a couple screws probably and ur going to hate ur car, but this is going to happen with either header style. get the long tubes. greater performance > lesser performance

 

To add another question, what about ground clearance? I have shorties on my T/A now and would like to go over to some long tubes but have serious concerns about hitting the ground. I also plan to put some Eibach springs on later which can cause a 1 to 1.5 inch drop. Last thing I want is for my headers to be dragging the ground everywhere, had enough of that **** with my Camaro.

 

what is ur ypipe diameter? if u have a 3" ypipe the clearance will not change.
