Default Lid vs. CAI?

after my car gets inspected, i'm going to look to start modding. I know the first mod is typically a lid/cai, but i was wondering which I should go with. Ithink the lt1's generally go with the cai, but i've noticed a good number of people on the board with ls1'sgo with just the lid. Is there a big difference between the two? My future mods will be a full exhaust, higher gears, tb, ls6 intake, possible cam later on down the road. With that in mind would it be better to go with a CAI, or it's not necessary and a lid should be all i need? basically i want to be pretty fast, making around 400rwhp would be nice, but i don't want to over spend in the wrong areas.

well, as for cai vs lid, its been debated, but for simplicity's sake, i think i would go with the lid..
if you want, you can just buy a lid, or you can smooth out your factory one.. I think the only difference is an aftermarket will delete the air silencer..
here's some links i would look at if i were you, if you go with this it can save you a bunch of money..

If you're going to shave out the baffles yourself, make sure you have appropirate tools, lol.
I actually just did mine today after school.
Took about an hour, I had no sanding tool other than my hand, so I used a pair of small hedge clippers to get the bigger pieces out.
Then finished it off with some sanding.
5 blisters later, the baffles are definately smaller, but I couldn't smooth them all the way out, but definately less restrictive.

Next to come is the silencer delete, those links were nice btw, but it said 99-02 intake silencer only? I thought all 98+ intakes were the same?
And then I've got my DIY Ram Air project this weekend =)

yeah, the 95-98 3.8 throttle body is just slightly different than the 99-02. The 95-98 has an angled one, and the 99+ is straight. I'm guessing it's due to the introduction of the electronic throttle control, but i've never heard that for sure..

Since I have 99 3800 I was wondering if and how big of a difference you were able to notice from this?

Bzman, if you get the whole K&N lid it should come with the filter. On the LS1 cars people will go with a "lid" because it picks up cold air from the top of the radiator and it's shorter than the LT1 style CAI. The LT1 hood does not allow for a lid style because it cuts too close to the radiator.

have a link by any chance? I went to slp's website, they sell their lid/filter seperate, $100 for lid, $50 for filter, which is kinda pricey.
