Just bought a 99 Z28 6 spd
410 gears have been used without issues. dont want to be dumping the clutch with any of the 4th gens or the rear will fail. would be smart to save for a 12 bolt if you wish to play with gusto. lol. post up a few pictures.
Thanks everybody.
Isn't it something when everybody in the F Body world knows the 10 bolts are junk, GM didn't seem to grasp it!
I looked up replacing with a 12 bolt and found about $2,500 is about what I'd spend. Can't do that so will stick with a gear change. I can do the gear change myself for the wholesale cost of parts! If I did decide to change to a 12 bolt or 9", what would be the next weakest link?
Just because I mention grandaughter and wife in the original post does not mean I can't thrash on a car like the best of them (when they are not in the car).
I tend to make sure I do a rolling start, then have some fun. But note taken to be a bit more attentive to hard starts and pounding gear changes. I don't think I'll be putting on wider tires after all so the tires would tend to give out rather that the rear end.
As far as pics, it's really just a plain red stock Z28 so it's not anything that will have everybody go WOW. It does have super high mileage (my secret), no... 187K. The body is in excellent condition. The previous owner bought it in 2000 with 22K and traded it in to a GM dealership for a new pickup. The only thing I can see cosmetically is changing the drivers seat foam and cover. Other than that, even 2 feet away, the paint is excellent!
Thanks,
Chuck M

weak points are usually the axle shaft and ring gear. Could put in Moser shafts and a stronger diff cover but it likely wont do anything. also definately go 9" > 12 bolt. you can build them to better suit your needs, they are stronger and generally dont cost much more.
Well with my power I pound gears and from a roll always chirp/spin tires if I have the chance (which isn't super often)...so you can get away with it, but I have stock gearing. I'll probably wait until I break my 10 bolt to go with a 9", or after I get my cam and have some cash left over (right).
Thanks,

FYI,
Took care of the stumble. It was actualy dying from about 1800 to 3000 RPM. Idle to 1,800 is perfect and above 3000 RPM was perfect.
Replaced the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) which made it run a bit better, then replaced the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF).
That was it. Took care of it all!
The car runs excellent and is alot of fun!
The front speakers are next. I'll get those tomorrow.
Then to get rid of that stupid 1st to 4th. GM or ANYBODY will not force me to shift my car their way! Heck, in order for me to bypass the 1st to 4th, I have to rev the car higher than I want to hence lower fuel economy... DUH! GM does the same on the Corvette side!
I will post picks. You guys won't believe the condition of the exterior. It's extremely close to a 9+ ... for real! No scratches or anything! This car was repainted not too long ago and was an extremely professional job. Better than factory. The t-tops are perfect. Rained today and no leaks!
I'm trying to call the previous owner to get a history. This car was obviously their baby!!!

the skip shift saved the original buyer $1000; gas guzzler tax. You should be thanking GM for making it as easy as it is to swap in the eliminator. Id rather pay $30 for the eliminator and spend 30 seconds under the car than pay an extra grand for the car.
Excellent point!
I'd rather fix the skipshift and save $1,000 for the person that bought it new...never knew that.
I was not there when the mileage police were there testing for fuel economy, but I still think that forcing me to rev the engine to bypass the skipshift was not the right move.
Good job scamming the EPA GM!!!
Skip shift still stinks
