Jack and stands question.

if your usin it on a truck your gona want max lift. i picked up the long red one i have about 10 years ago not long after i got the one ton. needed a jack that would go high enough for the truck but very low in case i had a flat on the boat trailer. also would have to be able to lift boat and trailer if needed. i think its like 5 ton, ill check the tonage and model tomorrow if i can remember. nice thing about it is its got a low profile so it just fits under the front of the camaro and is long enough to have room to pump it. here it is in this picture.

It can work, but like I said you might have to jack up each side of the car individually. To help with clearance you can take 2 small pieces of 2x6 or 2x8, and drive the front tires up, onto them; the couple extra inches is usually enough for the jack to clear.

the short jacks like this one are not long enough to let you pump them so you have to jack from the side. i jack one side up, put a jack stand under the front at the lower control arm connection then get the jack under the engine on the k member and jack it up.
with the long one i have to lift the car a little and not let it bounce down then put the jack under. my car is lowered 3/4 in in front. its a 2 3/4 ton extended lift floor jack with minimum clearance of 4 1/2.

hmmm, all this talk of using two jack stands when changing oil, is it bad that i only use one? I jack up the drivers side and put the stand in so the engine is tilted toward the drain. I always test to make sure the car is stable on the stand before I go under the car.

I always use 2 if I am going to get under the car, that is a lot of weight to have fall on someone. I think of it as 10 extra minutes that could potentially save my life, especially if you don't have someone there with you to help the car off or call for help.

One or two stands, doesn't matter. If you only need enough clearance to reach under on one side, and not have to get under the whole car, one will do.
The weight of the car will be distributed on each side by whatever is supporting it. One side on a stand and the other still on the tire, or both sides on jack stands, makes no difference in safety/weight support. And actually, if you have the car at an angle with only one jack stand, due to weight transfer, the side with the tire will be supporting more weight than the jack stand side will be.

yeah i will usually leave the jack under the car too, just incase i was stupid with the placement of the stand...but i usually shake the living hell out of the car to make sure it aint going anywhere. lol
