Signs of a bad one are it won't start when you turn the key. My expierence has been that when it's going out you have to wiggle the key around to get it to start. Or turn the key several times to get it to finally take.

My ICM went out, or was going out and after the car would sit for a few hours it would start, but would die after about 5 minutes and not start up again until it sat for a few hours. I tried everything to get it to start including starting fluid and had no luck. After getting it narrowed down to the ICM and replacing it my car starts and stays running like it should
