Hi need help
I just bought a 1998 camaro. The guy had everything but the right key. The key he had let's me turn the ignition but doesn't let it start because the key doesn't have the chip. Doesn't bother me because I needed the motor for a swap, but I need to start the car to check the trans and rear end. Is there a way to by pass the ignition security? Any help would be appreciated mainly look to to a toggle switch just for now.
Sounds like you have a non-resistor master key. Since you have a working key, it should be safe to assume the car isn't "hot"!
There are 15 different resistor key variations. Search here and/or google "vats bypass" for what wires to look for, and jump across with a resistor.
Here's a resistor 15 pack: DIRECTED INSTALLATION ESSENTIALS 652T GM(R) VATS Bypass 15-Piece Kit - Walmart.com
Since you don't know the value of your system, it'll be trial and error with the resistors till you grab the lucky one.

No i check through the DMV before buying the car. I bought it for a steal 2,000. Thanks i will buy a resistor today, and pray the motor is not seized or blown. Anyone one here did LS1 swap that could give me tips on everything.

I use photobucket.com. Upload the pictures there and copy the img link to your thread.
You need to get all 15 resistors and try them one at a time. There is a 5 minute reset period you have to wait between tries. Have you tried taking the title to your local dealer. They may be able to make a key for you. Back in the 80's you could only do it at the dealer who original sold the car but I am sure that stuff is all in a data base .
As for swaps there is a ton of information out there. It would be tuff to find a car that has not already been done.

That's why I said it's trial and error with the resistors, you might get lucky right off the bat though. You have a 1 in 15 chance of picking a winner, and your odds keep getting better with each resistor that gets eliminated. If Murphy's Law hangs over your head, it'll be the last one you pick. lol
If you want to just crank the engine over, hook up a jumper wire to the start wire on the starter (smaller of the two), and hold it onto the + battery terminal. That will activate the starter, but the engine won't start without the right resistor.

I think if you knew someone with a hand held tuner they could tune out the Vats system. . Or you could buy a mail order PCM already setup up for your swap. You are going to have to do it for the swap anyways.
When I worked at the dealer this was the biggest gravy job when it happened cause we could work on another car, try it go back work on the other car. We worked flat rate so we basically got almost double time.
