Lightbulb HELP! 97 z28

I have a 1997 z28 6 speed camaro that i just bought its all stock with a cold air intake. 100k miles

Problem,
-it gets hot when i drive in the city but runs good on the freeway
-I drove about 700 miles on it so far and on this last trip back from san jo the check engine light came on, i got home the next day it was off then came back on later that day.

Im thinking a full engine service might take care of it

any input would help

What is a full engine service? Do you mean a oil change? Since your car is ok on the highway chance are your fans are not coming on. Either do to a switch or relay or the fan itself. Service Engine soon light could be about any of a 1000 things. you need to find out if there is a code stored in the computer. Autozone can check it and tell you what code it is.

Why? you think the water is not moving fast enough? The only reason to replace a water pump is is if it leaks or the bearings start making noise. A system flush might be a better way to help you motor stay cool.

Well I bought some coolant and put a new radiator hose on it as well. Also I cleaned the intake and the lights been staying off, and by the full service I mean a full tune up which should help regardless but when u said to get that code will the code itself tell me what the problem is?

I won't tell you exactly what the problem is, but it can steer you in the right direction. The more information you have about the problem the better.
