Default GTO confusion?????

i just got my 1999 z28 out of the paint shop the other day and was out cruising for a little while. i ran into someone who had a LS1 gto and he wanted to race so we went out on some old country road and we raced from a dead stop. it was pretty much dead even but he had a fender on me due to wheel spin then i noticed him pulling away a little bit then for some reason he hit his brakes at 75 mph and now he wont race me again and is telling everyone he beat me, but it pissed me off because i started to come back on him at about 60 mph. both of the cars are auto and i thought i read some where that stock a z28 ls1 would out run a gto ls1 is this true? and what is the factory gearing difference because i know his car shifted in to 2nd way sooner than mine did which im sure benifitted him? but i know those cars weigh alot more than mine does.

They both have the same motor, so they both have the same HP numbers. You should have taken him because he is heavier than you, stock for stock. Now if either of you have mods it could be a different story. Without knowing more about his car it's hard to tell, but if his car shifted sooner it's possible that he has different gears in the rear end, which would give him an advantage in acceleration.

I agree w silver, the only reason for him to shift sooner is gears. that being said, its pretty lame to tell everyone he won and refuse a rematch when it was so close. just call him out in front of everyone for being a puss

You could have two identical cars racing and one car would beat the other.Driver expirence has something to do with it. My dad has an 04 GTO. He and I have run it at several different tracks. I have better times than he does. Not saying I'm a better driver, I am also smaller than he is. There are many different reasons why races are won and how.

driver error is taken out quite a bit with automatics. also, the GTO has horrible launch suspension and usually runs high 13s.
