Exclamation Fuel Pump Problem

Every holiday season I head back to Missouri and fire up my 97' Camaro. Most visits I get the oil changed and check the tire pressure, given I only drive the car a few times a year.

Following this past Christmas, the car had trouble starting up. It now wont start at all, according to family. The engine would sound like its close to kicking over but wont.. The local mechanic friend claims it could very well be the fuel pump, after tapping the pedal and trying the key. (Fuel injection being a little different on the newer models)

My questions for all the enthusiasts: would a used fuel pump be all that bad for a car I seldom drive? Also are their consequences to the engine if the refurbished pump were to go bad?

I know it would be a gamble paying for the labor install, but the difference is around $300 to give a used one a shot..
Let me know best practices is possible and thanks again!

Hey, thanks for the informative link! The last I attempted to start the car, the check engine light wasn't on. Since then, Ive returned to California and have run requests past my father on checking the fuel pressure.

His latest news is that a shop can install a new fuel pump w' labor for around $250-$300.
Given my limited amount of resources and location, you think that's the best deal?

Much appreciated..

That seems VERY cheap for a shop. I am wondering if they looked it up. You have to remove the exhaust and drop the rear axle then remove the gas tank.

If you search "trap door" or "hatch" you should fine a process for swapping out the pump that is no where near the work. It can be done in about 30 minutes.

That's about an $800 job, doing it the conventional way. Are you sure he didn't mean plus labor?

I would not just replace the fuel pump until you test it to see if is is actually bad, or going out....
