Default Fuel Problems...need serious help.

Alright I let a friend of mine drive my car for a couple days and I told him he could drive if he kept it fueled up for me. I get my car back to find MY GAS GAUGE IS BELOW EMPTY!! He didn't put a single drop of gasoline in it. So now when I take off it stutters big time and when Im cruising in 5th and go to give it a little gas it misses and same thing with 3rd and 6th gear. I thought maybe hopefully that it was just the fuel filter so I changed the filter to find that it's still doing the same thing. So now my only guess would be that the fuel got pretty screwed up. Is there anything else it could be or if it is the fuel pump could I do anything to not replace it or am I just going to have to replace it? Thanks for your info. guys.

I take it you've filled the tank up?

I do know it's very unhealthy for a pump to run air through the system. Our shop truck just recently lost the fuel pump because the mechanic didnt note the fuel level. Air was sucked in the system and caused a pump failure.

The pump uses the gasoline as a coolant and a lubricant and will get sick and eventually die if ran dry too often.
