fuel gauge pegging full
My 94 z28's fuel gauge is pegged all the way full. I've got 40 plus miles from my last fill so I know it ain't maxed out. The needle never moved that far before. I looked at my haynes manual and it show three wires to the fuel gauge. Ign, ground, and sender. I'm thinking the purple wire going to the sender is shorted. I don't think it can be ign. because then the other gauges would read funny, right? Possible shorted send unit? I just want your opinion before I attempt to drop the tank. Thanks

when i filled my car it would peg wouldnt start moving for about 60 miles and i could do about 120 130 before it got to full but would be empty at about 1/8th its the design of the tank the sending unit doesnt go straight down its more at a 45* angle 99% of 4th gens dont read correctly on the fuel gauge

I get about 100 miles before it moves then about another 100 till 1/2 and then the about 60 till I fill up. When I get some good freeway running i can pull almost 300 miles from a tank. I am getting around 24 in town (most of my driving) and 32 when I get a good long run on the freeway.

All fuel gauges do this, the amount of miles depends on the design but all have the same flaw. The float will reach the top of the tank, or top of its travel leaving an inch or two of air between the fuel and tank top. You keep filling and the float gets submerged. Now the float will not move again untill the fuel level lowers enough for the float to float on a lower level of fuel. So it will take a few miles to refloat the float.

I know all tanks do this to a certain extent, but I've owned a lot of vehicles, and none has ever been so frustratingly inaccurate. My other cars may go 25-30 miles before they start to move, but on the Camaro, once it starts to move, you only have 2/3 of a tank left, and then you can just seem to watch it move down as you drive. I always make sure I fill up when it reaches 1/4 tank. My girlfriend even ran out of gas once on the Camaro, and I don't blame her, I blame the pitiful design of the tank and gauge. Just my 2 cents.

LOL at fuel guages. I use to have a high top conversion van that held so much gas one had to take out a loan to fill it up. ONce full, you could drive a couple days with it on full. Then when that fuel gage started to move, it went down to empty in a matter of hours! It somewhat gave a false since of "getting good gas mileage"!!

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll run it and hopefully see movement. I just don't remember seeing it peg like this b4. I was concerned for the gauge because I was told that it can be damaged running it that way.
