you need to get ahold of the dmv to find out if its been registered lately and to get the previous owner info then you need to get ahold of the previous owner and see what going on with the car

Because you don't hold the title to the car, and trying to get a title in your name can be a big hassle without being able to contact the current owner. Abandoned or not, the state still has an owner on record. And if you apply for a lost title, the state would send the duplicate copy to that persons name, not yours. What year is the car? There are some ways around some of that b.s., if the car is older than a 1995 model.

What makes you think it's abandoned?
Who's property is it on?
Even if it was abandoned on your property it could be hard to get a title.
If the bank has the title at least here in WA you can just about forget it.
Also here in WA it can be very hard to find out who it was last registered to and that's the first step you gotta take.

Rules vary from state to state. Here in PA it is almost impossible for a regular person to get the title for an abandon car.

If you have a towing business it is a lot easier but it still can take up to a year of waiting from when you file the paper work for an abandon vehicle. It is not considered abandon until the tow charges and storage fees are greater then the estimated value of the car. I think the state needs to try to contact the owner several times before they will reissue the title.

Imagine if you could get a title easily of cars not reported stolen. You would have tow truck drivers seeing who is real sick and just going and getting their cars. By the time the person got better or died their car would be sold off.

If you ever come by my house, and see a 2000 Trans Am with 3 flat tires, rust on the rotors, no plates and no registration, do you think that somehow you could make it yours? I doubt very seriously that anyone " abandoned" a 2000 Trans Am.

Where is this car "abandoned"? On the side of a road, in an alley, in someone's driveway?
